Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of entry passages down to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - imposed militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their courage," he added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel deployed over the festive period. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who pose a risk to our security, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces carried out what it called a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
