A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was proposed pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
